Peng Hsiao-yen on "Transculturality in Translation: Paradox of Self and Other"

4 Mar, 2021

Transcultural Studies has emerged as a prominent research paradigm in recent decades. The “trans” in transculturality denotes both “to transcend” and “to transform,” indicating that the process of the translation and infiltration of other languages and concepts, most often in a time of crisis, is the crucial key to self-renewal for a culture. In the prolonged operations of cultural hybridization, self and other are in a perpetual paradox. In harmony, the foreign (elements remote in time or space) in one’s own culture is never questioned; in dire cacophony, however, it can become sources of severe conflicts. The concept of transcultural paradox argues for the precarious coexistence of self and other.
